Jennie Travel Files: Greece and Turkey.
On September 25, 1998 Jennie and twenty-five very excited travelers
took a chartered bus to Kennedy Airport to start their adventure
to Greece and Turkey.
The trip started in Athens with a visit to the Acropolis, a
walk through the Plaka (The Old Town) and an evening light show.
The lights of the city were dazzling from Lycabettus Hill, reached
by an aerial tram. A restaurant at the top served wonderful
Greek coffee.
Orient Cruise Lines took the group to the various Greek Islands.
Mykonos is beautiful with its whitewashed houses and shops.
In Santorini, many in the group were brave enough to ride donkeys
up the mountain while the less adventurous took the tram. For
all, the view from the top of this island, believed to be the
Lost City of Atlantis, was indescribable!
The antiquities in Crete were mind-boggling. It is hard to
conceive of the genius of the 5,000-year old Minoan culture.
Rhodes presents a mixture of old and new. The old walled Roman
town with its many shops attracts tourists from around the world.
Out in the countryside there is the contrast of the ruins of
the Acropolis of Rhodes and the view up the mountain where the
movie "Guns of Navarrone" was filmed.
Only 10% of the ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus have been
excavated. Just outside the city is the final home of the Virgin
Mary which has a wonderful mystical quality about it.
Sailing past Gallipoli through the Dardanelles into the city
of Istanbul there is an incredible sight from the Bosphorus
with a view of the Blue Mosque and its Minarets and the Old
City of Istanbul. The Bazaar with its 5,000 shops is the original
mall of the world where you can purchase anything you can think
of. Unfortunately, with 12 million people living here the traffic
and pollution can overwhelm you.
Looking back on our trip, we enjoyed many dinner parties, eating
experiences and other fun activities. A prime example was our
curiosity to see the Ciragan Palace, a very deluxe hotel. We
went there for coffee late one evening. When we commented on
the chilly night air, each of us was given a warm woolly shawl
that they keep on hand for just such evenings. A wonderful and
memorable trip!
